If you are experiencing reflux or stomach problems, your consultant may recommend a gastroscopy and endoscopy to help identify the cause of your condition, repair problems such as bleeding ulcers or dilate strictures (narrowings in the bowel pipe). A gastroscopy may also be required for the removal of polyps (abnormal tissue growths) or early-stage cancerous tumours.

Prompt endoscopic procedures for effective stomach treatment

If you are having a diagnostic gastroscopy, your Consultant will advise on the results following the procedure and can help you to book any consultations needed for further treatment.

FAQs

What does a gastroscopy procedure involve?

A gastroscopy uses a long flexible tube (endoscope) with a small camera to get a clear view of the stomach. The procedure is often carried out under sedation rather than general anaesthetic, so while you won’t be asleep, you’ll be drowsy and have little awareness of what’s happening. Sometimes your throat is numbed with a local anaesthetic spray.

The endoscope will be placed in the back of your mouth and you will be asked to swallow the first part of the tube. It will then be guided down your oesophagus and into your stomach.

Will I need to stay in hospital?

Following the procedure you will be taken to your room or bay to rest, although it is usual to be able to leave hospital the same day, dependent on the nature of your procedure.

Does the a gastroscopy / endoscopy procedure hurt?

An endoscopy isn’t usually painful, but you might experience some mild discomfort after your anaesthetic wears off.
