Our breast clinic is run by a team of breast care specialists, including a specialist Macmillan Breast Care Nurse, to provide you with a fast diagnosis and support you with any further treatment.

No referrals needed for a fast, straightforward breast exam

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, you do not need a referral from your GP to attend the breast clinic:

  • Painless lumps in the breasts
  • Unusually sore breasts or areas of tenderness
  • Changes in the size or shape of a breast
  • Dimpling to the skin of the breast
  • Thickened or dense breast tissue
  • Nipple inversion
  • Limp or thickening behind the nipple
  • Rash affecting the nipple
  • Blood-stained discharge from the nipple
  • Swelling or a lump in the armpit

We provide a comprehensive screening and diagnostic service, including mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy and aspiration procedures.

Who is the breast clinic for?

Anyone experiencing symptoms such as breast pain, abnormalities or changes within the breast and armpit area can book an appointment with the breast clinic.

What to expect from your consultation

One of our clinic nurses will accompany you to your consultation, where your consultant will discuss your symptoms and examine you. Your consultant will generally request that you have diagnostic scans and tests during your appointment in order to provide prompt results. Our clinic nurses will show you to the relevant department and will be able to offer you support and information about the scans and tests your consultant has requested. These may include a mammogram, an ultrasound of your breast and a biopsy.

Our specialist mammographers will carry out your mammogram and the images will be sent to your consultant during the same clinic.

If you require an ultrasound and biopsy, these will be carried out during your Breast Clinic appointment. However, the tissue sample will need to be sent away for investigation and you will be given a follow up appointment to see your Consultant usually one week later. Your Consultant will be able to discuss this with you.

What if further treatment is needed?

If your consultant recommends further treatment, they will discuss all the available options with you when they go through your results. Our Macmillan Breast Care Nurse and team of specialists will also be able to support you and help with any questions you might have.
