A breast biopsy is a sample of tissue taken from the area of your breast that needs to be checked. At KIMS Hospital, breast lump biopsies are usually carried out as part of a Breast Clinic appointment. Your Consultant may request a biopsy alongside imaging to help give an accurate diagnosis of your breast lump. If you have any symptoms relating to your breast, the first step is to visit our Breast Clinic.

What to expect from a breast lump biopsy
During a breast lump biopsy you will be awake but the area of your breast where the biopsy is taken will be made numb by local anaesthetic administered to the area. The use of ultrasound may be needed to help identify the location of the lump within your breast.
Breast lump biopsies are usually carried out as part of a Breast Clinic appointment, if your Consultant feels it is necessary following your initial breast examination and imaging.
Will it hurt?
No, a breast lump biopsy is performed under local anaesthetic and the area should be numb. However, you may feel a slight sting when the anaesthetic is administered.
When will I know the results of the biopsy?
You will be asked to come back and see your Consultant one week post-biopsy to be given the results.
