If you are seeking chronic sinusitis treatment (for an infection of the mucous membrane that lines the sinuses) or treatment for other sinus-related issues, an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist may recommend Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS).

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery widens the passage between the nose and the sinus so mucus can no longer get trapped. This minimises infections such as chronic sinusitis returning.

What happens during functional endoscopic sinus surgery?

The ENT Specialist will usually perform endoscopic sinus surgery under a general anaesthetic. A small tube with a special lens called an endoscope is used to examine each of your nasal passages. A special instrument is then used to remove any polyps and to widen the passages from your sinuses into your nose. This effective sinus infection treatment allows for normal ventilation and draining.
