Hernias can occur at any age but are mostly associated with getting older. As we age, the muscles and tissue in our abdomen can become weaker.

An inguinal hernia is caused when a part of your bowel or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the groin area, causing a bulge to appear.

Helping you get back to doing what you love

If you have a lump in the groin the first step is to have an initial consultation with a specialist, who will discuss your options for surgery. Inguinal hernia surgery is a straightforward procedure to repair the weak area in your abdominal wall that is causing the hernia.

Inguinal hernia surgery FAQs

What does inguinal hernia surgery involve?

An inguinal hernia operation aims to push the bulge back into place and repair the weakness in the muscle walls. Hernia repair can be performed as an open or laparoscopic (keyhole) procedure. Most inguinal surgery repairs are carried out as open procedures. Your Consultant may also use a mesh to repair your hernia. All of these options will be discussed with you during your consultation.

Where will my surgery take place?

Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, surgery will take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.

How long do I need to stay in hospital for?

You should be able to go home the same day, but it is possible you will need to stay overnight for observations. Your Consultant will be able to discuss this with you during your consultation.

How long is the recovery time?

Most patients tend to make a full recovery within six weeks, with many people returning to driving and work within two weeks. However, this will vary for every individual and you should be able to discuss this during your consultation.
