What does inguinal hernia surgery involve?

An inguinal hernia operation aims to push the bulge back into place and repair the weakness in the muscle walls. Hernia repair can be performed as an open or laparoscopic (keyhole) procedure. Most inguinal surgery repairs are carried out as open procedures. Your Consultant may also use a mesh to repair your hernia. All of these options will be discussed with you during your consultation with our inguinal hernia specialists.

Where will my surgery hernia operation take place?

Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, surgery will take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.

How long do I need to stay in hospital for?

You should be able to go home the same day, but it is possible you will need to stay overnight for observations. Your Consultant will be able to discuss this with you during your consultation.

How long is the recovery time after hernia treatment?

Most patients tend to make a full recovery within six weeks, with many people returning to driving and work within two weeks. However, this will vary for every individual and you should be able to discuss this during your consultation with our inguinal hernia specialists.
