Neck Lump FAQs

What causes a neck lump?

There are many things that could cause a lump in your neck. The most common cause is lymph nodes, small lumps of tissue containing white blood cells which help fight infection.

Do lymph nodes mean I have cancer?

Lymph nodes are your body’s way of naturally fighting an infection. This can be a number of illnesses and does not mean you definitely have cancer. Our expert healthcare team will perform scans and tests to help highlight the problem.

When is a neck lump cancerous?

There is no way for you to know for certain that a neck lump is cancerous without a Doctor performing some tests. However, there are ways you can investigate a lump to decide how concerned you should be.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Has this lump been here for more than 2 weeks?
  • Is the lump hard to touch?
  • Is the lump changing or slowly getting bigger?

If you answered yes to any of these, we suggest booking an appointment with your GP or with one of our neck lump specialists as soon as possible. If you answered no but are still concerned, please feel free to still book an appointment with us. You know your body best.

Can I treat neck lumps naturally?

To relieve some discomfort you can apply a warm compress such as a cloth soaked in warm water. Get plenty of rest and take some over the counter painkillers if necessary. Remember to consult your Doctor if discomfort persists or the lump does not go away.
