A lung function test, also called pulmonary function tests, can be performed to determine the health of your lungs, as well as any potential conditions that may be affecting your health.

If you find yourself feeling short of breath, we measure the total size of your lungs, the volume and flow of air that they inhale and exhale, and their efficiency for exchanging gases through one or more non-invasive tests.

Peace of mind for healthy lungs

Whether as part of a routine health check, a recommendation due to your line of work or a referral from a consultant, we give you peace of mind for good lung health and will be there when any further treatment is needed.

Some of the lung tests include:

  • Spirometry test
To determine the volume and flow of air inhaled and exhaled.
  • Lung volume test
Measuring the total size of your lungs and how air is distributed.

    • Helium Dilution
    • Whole Body Plethysmography
  • Gas transfer test
Measuring how efficient your lungs are at exchanging gases.

Lung function test FAQs

What can I expect from a lung function test?

The test is performed by one of our specially trained Respiratory Physiologists.  Prior to your test, you will receive any pre-test instructions so that you are ready on the day.

Upon arrival, you will have your height and weight measured to gain predictive values for each of the tests. This allows your Physiologist and Consultant to compare the lung function results with that of others the same age, height and sex.

The lung function test generally consists of one or more tests that involve breathing into a machine through a mouthpiece or tube for a period of time, whilst wearing a nose peg. This will help us to determine the size of your lungs, the capacity and speed that air can be inhaled and exhaled, and how efficient your lungs are at exchanging gases.

What happens if my results show an issue?

If you’ve been referred by a Consultant, they will discuss your results following the test and will be able to advise whether you will need any further consultations or treatment. If you’ve been referred
