Professional Profile

Mr Rajab Kerwat is a Consultant General Surgeon at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. His primary clinical interests include upper gastrointestinal (GI) laparoscopic surgery and GI endoscopy.

He graduated from Alfateh University Medical School in Tripoli, Libya, in 1988. He subsequently completed a comprehensive 12-year surgical training programme across London, Cardiff, and Tokyo. In 2001, he was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at Queen Mary’s Hospital.

Mr Kerwat has extensive expertise in laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and has published several articles in this field. He is particularly known for combining keyhole (laparoscopic) techniques with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to manage complex cases of gallstones, bile duct stones, jaundice, cholangitis, and pancreatitis.

With a broad surgical skillset, Mr Kerwat performs a variety of advanced laparoscopic procedures within both the NHS and private sector. These include laparoscopic splenectomy, abdominal, groin, and incisional hernia repair, as well as hiatus hernia repair for both primary and recurrent gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and large hiatus hernias. He is also experienced in single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) for procedures such as cholecystectomy, hernia repair, appendicectomy, and right hemicolectomy.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Kerwat is an experienced trainer. He teaches junior doctors in both general and laparoscopic surgery as part of the Foundation Training and Higher Surgical Training Programmes. He is also a faculty member on the laparoscopic training courses at The Royal College of Surgeons.

Throughout his career, Mr Kerwat has remained committed to delivering safe, high-quality, and patient-focused care. He continually updates his clinical knowledge and technical skills to ensure the best possible outcomes for his patients.
