Vaginal prolapse repair
If you are experiencing pain or discomfort or have noticed a lump in or coming out of your vagina, you may have a prolapsed vagina.Over time, the muscles and ligaments that support your vagina and womb can become overstretched or weakened, usually after childbirth, after a hysterectomy, the menopause or a result of obesity, which can cause your vagina and womb to drop down and sometimes create a bulging appearance. This is not always painful and may sometimes go unnoticed until identified during a cervical screening.

FAQs
What does a colporrhaphy (vaginal repair) involve?
The procedure usually takes less than an hour and can be completed under local or general anaesthetic. Your Gynaecologist will usually repair your vaginal wall through your vagina, using dissolvable stitches to strengthen the tissue. This may be at the front or back wall of the vagina, or the top of the vagina depending on the prolapse. Sometimes the operation is performed through an abdominal incision. Your Consultant may also need to remove some excess vaginal skin.
Where will my surgery take place?
Vaginal prolapse surgery will take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including initial consultations or follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.
What is the recovery period?
You may have a catheter fitted to take urine from your bladder into a bag, and a dressing (vaginal pack) to reduce bleeding. Both will usually be removed after a day or two. It usually takes around six weeks to make a full recovery from the surgery.
What is the cost of private vaginal prolapse repair at KIMS Hospital?
A private vaginal prolapse repair at KIMS Hospital starts from £6,811. You can use private medical insurance or pay for yourself. Flexible payment plans are available to spread the cost.
