Parathyroid surgery (Parathyroidectomy)
Parathyroid issues, such as hyperparathyroidism, can result in a range of health problems that can be alleviated with a parathyroidectomy. If you’re experiencing issues with your parathyroid, including primary, secondary or tertiary hyperparathyroidism, you may be considering parathyroid surgery. During parathyroid surgery, an ENT Surgeon will remove one or more of the parathyroid glands.
Health problems caused by parathyroid issues, such as too much calcium in your blood, could be resulting in symptoms such as:
- kidney stones
- fatigue
- memory problems
- muscle and bone pain
- excessive urinating
A parathyroidectomy is an effective hyperparathyroidism treatment that can help alleviate symptoms by stopping the parathyroid gland producing excess hormones, or by removing a tumour. Whatever the cause, our team of specialists are here to help you get back to doing the things you love, and will support you every step of the way.

Parathyroid FAQs
What is Parathyroid surgery?
Parathyroid surgery is a minimally invasive procedure to remove one or more parathyroid glands and any tumours residing in the patient’s neck.
How long does a parathyroid surgery take?
Parathyroid surgery can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on how long it takes your surgeon to locate and remove the targeted gland.
Recommended aftercare
Avoid getting any bandages wet for the first 48 hours and be careful to not touch the incision site. If skin clips or sutures are used then you will be advised when they need to be removed.
Full recovery can take up to three weeks but you will be able to exercise properly within a few days. Make sure you have approval from one of our healthcare professionals before you start exercising.
Is parathyroid surgery painful?
Local anaesthesia is provided to numb the small area where the surgery will take place. You may feel movement and pressure but you should not feel any pain.
