A chest X-ray is a procedure to create detailed images of the inside of your chest and examine areas such as the lungs, heart, airways and blood vessels. If you have been struggling with breathing difficulties, chest pain or a persistent cough, you may be referred for a chest X-ray to diagnose conditions such as pneumonia, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or other problems with your heart.

State-of-the-art equipment for the best possible experience

A chest or lung X-ray involves passing low-exposure radiation through the chest area to create an image of your organs, soft tissue and airways. The whole procedure is very quick and carried out within minutes, although you will need to remain very still to allow your Radiologist to get a clear scan.

Following your X-ray, you will need to arrange an appointment to discuss your chest X-ray results, diagnosis and next steps for treatment with the clinician that referred you. Our teams can help with this.

FAQs

Where can I have my chest X-ray?

Chest X-rays are available at KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre. If you had your initial consultation at one of our facilities, you can still choose to have your X-ray at either location, for example if an earlier appointment is available or you find it more convenient, depending on where you live and work.

What does a chest X-ray involve?

For chest and lung X-rays you will usually stand against a flat surface, but we can accommodate your needs if you are unable to stand. Your Radiographer may need to position your hands and arms in a particular way before operating the scan. You will not be able to feel the X-ray and the procedure will only take a few minutes.

What should I wear for my X-ray?

You may be asked to wear a gown for the X-ray, but it is a good idea to come in wearing loose, comfortable clothing in case you are able to wear your clothes. You will need to remove any jewellery prior to the examination so that metal does not interfere with the equipment; this may also apply to dentures and hearing aids.

When will I receive my chest X-ray results?

The results of your X-ray will not be available immediately, as they will be reviewed and analysed by a Radiologist before being sent to your Consultant or GP. You can then discuss your results at your next appointment.

Are X-rays harmful?

Whilst X-rays are a form of low exposure radiation, if you have been referred for an X-ray by your Consultant or GP, it is because they feel that the benefits will outweigh the potential negative effects of radiation. We use the latest equipment to ensure the dose of radiation is minimised and all of our imaging requests are justified by expert radiographers to ensure the procedure is carried out in your best interests.

What if I need further tests or treatment?

If your results show that you need further tests or treatment, your Consultant or GP will advise and recommend a treatment plan for you. Some tests and minor outpatient treatments are available at both of our facilities; however any surgery will take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone.
