Fast and Convenient Smear Test Appointments
A smear test, also known as cervical screening, is a simple and effective test to help prevent cervical cancer. A smear test checks a sample of cells from your cervix for high risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause abnormal changes to the cells in your cervix.
Regular screening is one of the most important steps in early prevention of cervical cancer.
We provide confidential and convenient smear test appointments. Whether you are due for routine screening, have missed an NHS appointment or would simply prefer a private service, we are here to help.
Who Should Have a Smear Test?
You may wish to arrange a private smear test if you:
- Have a cervix and are between the ages of 25 and 64
- Are overdue for cervical screening
- Have missed your NHS invitation
- Want reassurance between routine screening intervals
- Have a family history of cervical cancer
- Prefer a private appointment with greater flexibility
- Would like a quicker appointment
If you have symptoms such as unusual vaginal bleeding, bleeding after sex, pelvic pain or unusual discharge, you should seek medical advice promptly, as a smear test is not designed to investigate symptoms.
What Happens During the Appointment?
During the cervical screening:
- You will be asked to lie comfortably on an examination couch.
- A small instrument, called a speculum, is gently inserted into the vagina to allow the cervix to be seen.
- A soft brush is inserted through the speculum to gently sweep the cervix to collect a sample of cells.
- The sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
The test usually takes only a few minutes, although your appointment allows time to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
Is a Smear Test Painful?
Most people find cervical screening quick and manageable, although some may experience mild discomfort or pressure during the process. We prioritise your comfort and dignity throughout the appointment and will explain each step of the process clearly to you.
If you feel anxious about cervical screening, please let us know. We will take extra care to make the experience as comfortable as possible.
Results
The results of your smear test will be sent to your NHS GP and you will receive a copy within 10 days.
