Why have a prostate health check?

Prostate problems are common, especially as men get older. While many prostate conditions are not cancer, early detection is key to successful treatment. You may wish to book a prostate health check if you:

  • Have a family history of prostate cancer
  • Are over the age of 40
  • Have noticed changes in your urinary habits
  • Are concerned about your PSA level
  • Want reassurance about your prostate health

What is included in a prostate health check?

Your journey with us is straightforward and designed for your reassurance:

  1. Initial appointment: You will meet with a nurse for a PSA blood test and urinalysis.
  2. Results review:
    • If your PSA is below 2.5 ng/ml, you may be referred for a bi-parametric MRI scan, a short and accurate test to check for any abnormalities. (no contrast dye injection needed)
    • If your PSA is above 2.5 ng/ml, or if your prostate is enlarged or symptomatic, you will usually be referred for a multi-parametric MRI scan for a more detailed assessment.
  3.  Consultant referral: If your MRI or PSA results suggest a concern, or if you have bothersome urinary symptoms, you will be referred to a consultant urologist for further investigation and treatment options.
  4.  Telephone consultation: You will have a GP telephone consultation to discuss your results, provide reassurance, and agree on next steps.
  5.  Follow-up or discharge: If no concerns are found, you will be discharged with peace of mind about your prostate health.
