Dr Richard Leech graduated from King’s College School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1990. As a Specialist Registrar in the South East of England he worked in hospitals in East Kent, East Sussex, at Guy’s and King’s in London, and completed a 6 month fellowship in the Liver Transplant Unit at King’s College Hospital. During a 12 month sabbatical at the Royal Perth Hospital, Western Australia, he spent 4 months working in the “Outback” in collaboration with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

In 1999, he was appointed as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. He is Lead Clinician for Long Term Vascular Access and has also held several senior managerial positions in the Trust including Lead Consultant for Obstetric Anaesthesia 1999-2011, Royal College of Anaesthetists Tutor from 2000-2006, and Clinic Director for Critical Care from 2011-2015.

Dr Leech has always worked closely with the Kent Oncology Centre and following a request from their Divisional Director in 2010, he set up the Portacath service at Maidstone Hospital. Since then he has personally implanted well over 2,500 Ports, making him one of the most experienced doctors to perform this procedure in the South East.

  • Long Term Vascular Access – Portacaths, Arm Ports, PICCs and Tunnelled Central Venous Catheters (Hickman Lines) for Chemotherapy
  • Anaesthesia for major cancer surgery including thoracic epidural analgesia
  • Spinal anaesthesia for major Orthopaedic surgery: hip and knee replacements
  • Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) and sedation techniques
