Professional Profile

Dr Jong is an experienced dermatologist who has a special interest in treating skin cancers but in addition he also treats all types of rashes and dermatology conditions including psoriasis, eczema, acne, etc.

Dr Jong is a good listener and he recognises the importance of skin health and the impact of skin diseases on quality of life.

The treatments that he regularly carries out for both NHS and private patients include cryotherapy, curettage and cautery, excision and biopsy, daylight photodynamic therapy, intralesional steroid injection, botulinum toxin injection for axillary hyperhidrosis, and patch testing (limited to one hospital site).

Teaching and publications

Aside from clinical duties, Dr Jong is also a clinical supervisor for student nurses, Dr Jong has published papers on the impact of photosensitive skin conditions on quality of life and on contact allergies on UK patients. He was the lead author for the “Infections and Infestations” chapter of the Dermatology Training textbook for registrars.

Training and experience

Dr Jong graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1997. He undertook postgraduate medical training in the UK and passed the Royal College of Physicians exam in 2003.

He commenced his dermatology career in 2003 as a Clinical Research Fellow at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where he participated in the pioneering research on topical photodynamic therapy (PDT). PDT is now an established treatment for actinic keratosis, Bowen’s disease and superficial basal cell carcinoma.

Dr Jong entered the competitive registrar training programme in 2004 with the South Wales Deanery. During his 4-year training period, he worked alongside several renowned dermatologists and completed an important research project supported by a grant from the British Skin Foundation. He coordinated a nationwide study on the impact on quality of life of major photosensitivity disorders.

He completed specialist dermatology training in Wales in 2008 and has been on the specialist register since then. Dr Jong began his career as a Consultant Dermatologist in 2009 at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport. During this time, he completed a 12-week diploma in dermoscopy, (a technique to examine skin lesions, skin cancers and infestations) at Cardiff University. In order to gain further experience in treating skin cancers, Dr Jong worked in Newcastle, Australia from 2015 to 2016. He regularly presented cases at the local monthly dermatology meetings at the John Hunter Hospital. He had managed patients with severe sun damage and skin malignancies during his time in Australia.

Dr Jong was the Clinical and Skin Cancer Lead for West Kent Dermatology from 2016 to 2022. During his tenure, Dr Jong participated at the weekly skin cancer multidisciplinary meeting to discuss patients who had been diagnosed with high-risk skin cancers including melanoma and squamous cell cancer.

He maintains and improves the standards of care by regularly attending national meetings such as Allergy of Skin and Melanoma in Focus annual conference. He is a member of the British Association of Dermatologist, American Academy of Dermatology and International Dermoscopy Society.
