Professional Profile

Dr Jong is an experienced dermatologist who has a special interest in the diagnosing and treating of skin cancers. He is trained in using the dermatoscope to diagnose skin cancers and to perform mole check.

Dr Jong is a good listener and he recognises the importance of skin health and the impact of skin diseases on quality of life.

The treatments that he regularly performs include cryotherapy, curettage and cautery, excision, biopsy, flap repair, daylight photodynamic therapy, and intralesional steroid injection of scars. He is competent in giving botulinum toxin injections in the armpit for excessive sweating. Basic patch tests are also routinely performed twice a month in Maidstone.

Please note that Dr Jong may not treat certain lesions on the eyelids, nostrils, ears and digits, large lesions on the extremities and scalp, and very large lipomas (over 5cm) where reconstructive surgery such as skin graft may be required. He will make a diagnosis and/or refer you on where appropriate. Similarly, cosmetic treatments are not currently being offered. Please email us before your appointment if you have queries.

Teaching and publications

Dr Jong has published papers on the impact of photosensitive skin conditions on quality of life and on contact allergies on UK patients. He was the lead author for the “Infections and Infestations” chapter of the Dermatology Training textbook for registrars.

Training and experience

Dr Jong graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1997. He undertook postgraduate medical training in the UK and passed the Royal College of Physicians exam in 2003.

He commenced his dermatology career in 2003 as a Clinical Research Fellow at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where he participated in the pioneering research on topical photodynamic therapy (PDT). PDT is now an established treatment for actinic keratosis, Bowen’s disease and superficial basal cell carcinoma.

Dr Jong entered the competitive registrar training programme in 2004 with the South Wales Deanery. During his 4-year training period, he worked alongside several renowned dermatologists and completed an important research project supported by a grant from the British Skin Foundation. He coordinated a nationwide study on the impact on quality of life of major photosensitivity disorders.

He completed specialist dermatology training in Wales in 2008 and has been on the specialist register since then. Dr Jong began his career as a Consultant Dermatologist in 2009 at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

During this time, he completed a 12-week diploma in dermoscopy, (a technique to examine skin lesions, skin cancers and infestations) at Cardiff University. In order to gain further experience in treating skin cancers, Dr Jong worked in Newcastle, Australia from 2015 to 2016. He regularly presented cases at the local monthly dermatology meetings at the John Hunter Hospital. He had managed patients with severe sun damage and skin malignancies during his time in Australia.

Dr Jong was the Clinical and Skin Cancer Lead for West Kent Dermatology from 2016 to 2022. During his tenure, Dr Jong participated at the weekly skin cancer multidisciplinary meeting to discuss patients who had been diagnosed with high-risk skin cancers including melanoma and squamous cell cancer.

He maintains and improves the standard of care by regularly attending national and international meetings organised by the British Association of Dermatologists, American Academy of Dermatology and International Dermoscopy Society. He is a member of all three organisations.
