If you are struggling with earaches and repeated ear infections, you may have a condition commonly known as glue ear. Glue ear is a condition in which fluid builds behind the ear drum. We work with an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) team that can support you with the insertion of ear grommets, which are small plastic or metal tubes to allow air into your ear and prevent further build up.

A speedy procedure to relieve painful glue ear symptoms

Following your initial consultation and examination, your Consultant will remove the fluid from your ear drum by suction before placing the small grommet into your ear. This is a very quick procedure, which usually takes around 20 minutes, meaning you are free to go home the same day and carry on with your usual activities.

FAQs

Where will my procedure take place?

Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, the insertion of ear grommets takes place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.

What does the insertion of ear grommets involve?

The grommet insertion operation is performed under a general anaesthetic and takes around 20 minutes. A small hole will be made in the ear drum so the fluid can be removed by suction (a myringotomy), before the small tube (grommet) is placed into the hole.

How do I protect my ear after the procedure?

You should not swim for six weeks after the procedure to minimise ear infections. Your Consultant will give you further advice on how to protect the ear and aid recovery.
