Over time, the macular can deteriorate with age and cause problems with our vision. It develops painlessly, so we often don’t realise there is a problem until our vision is notably affected. An examination of the retina can help detect early signs of macular degeneration.

Painless outpatient eye treatment to improve your vision

There are two types of macular degeneration: dry or wet. Dry macular degeneration is caused by gradual degeneration of retinal cells, which fail to regenerate. Wet macular degeneration is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels, which leak fluid and can lead to scarring. There is no treatment available for dry macular degeneration. However wet macular degeneration can be treated with injections in the eye. These injections help to stabilise and improve your vision.

FAQs

Where will my procedure take place?

Regardless of where you had your initial consultation, all surgical procedures take place at KIMS Hospital in Maidstone. Most outpatient appointments, including scans and tests, and follow up appointments with your Consultant, can take place at either KIMS Hospital or Sevenoaks Medical Centre.

What does age related macular degeneration (ARMD) treatment involve?

Current therapy can be undertaken as an outpatient procedure and involves a variety of injections in the back of the eye.

The medication is injected using a very fine needle following local anaesthetic eye drops to reduce pain. Most patients tolerate this procedure very well with minimal discomfort.

When will I notice results?

Treatment for wet macular degeneration helps to stabilise vision. This treatment cannot restore the sight in your eye if there is significant scarring, however most people will notice a positive effect in the first three to four months.
