Headaches are one of the most common complaints in the UK, with over 10 million sufferers. If you are unable to treat your headaches with over the counter, prescription or lifestyle remedies, you may need to see a specialist to discuss options for long-term treatment. Botulinum toxin type A injections (Botox® injections) for migraine headaches can help alleviate migraines for a small group of patients with chronic, treatment resistant migraine headaches.
Combining expertise in neurology and pain management for effective migraine relief
Botulinum toxin type A, or ‘Botox’ as it is commonly known, is a purified neurotoxin (nerve toxin) derived from the bacterium Clostridium. The reasons why Botox® is effective in aiding migraines are not clear, although several theories have been put forward,
- Botox may reduce the nerves’ ability to send pain signals during a migraine
- Botox may prevent brain pain processing during a migraine

How is Botox® administered for migraine relief?
Botulinum toxin (Botox ®) treatment for migraine takes just a few minutes to perform and consists of injections with a small needle at several key points across the head and neck. The standard regime recommended by NICE involves 31 injections.
There is some minor initial discomfort involved. You will be provided with a fuller explanation of potential sides effects and asked to sign a consent form for the procedure at your initial consultation. You should start noticing a reduction in the frequency of attacks if the treatment is working; this usually lasts for three months. Your Consultant will discuss onward treatment with you and will monitor your condition after the treatment has been performed.
