A consultant-led healthy bowel assessment at KIMS Hospital is available to anyone over the age of 18 without symptoms. The comprehensive assessment will look at the full health of your bowel including indications for cancer and polyps. Our consultants will also be able to help support you if you require any further investigations following your assessment for bowel conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Colonoscopy for faster, more accurate results

The assessment for a healthy bowel begins with a couple of blood tests, which our nurses will perform ahead of your appointment with your Consultant. During your initial consultation with your accredited bowel screening Consultant, they will discuss your family history of bowel conditions, review your blood test results and refer you for a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy allows your consultant to view the full length of your colon and spot any abnormalities or suspicious areas straight away, for faster, more accurate results. However, for a small number of people a colonoscopy will not be appropriate. Your Consultant will be able to discuss this with you and suggest alternative investigations if need.

Before your colonoscopy our pharmacy will give you a preparation to help clear your bowel. Our pharmacy team will discuss this with you and one of our specialist endoscopy nurses will speak to you about the procedure and perform a brief pre -assessment either face to face or by telephone. After your colonoscopy, you will be given a follow-up appointment with your Consultant who will discuss your report.

We know that conditions of the bowel can be painful and sometimes the ‘not knowing’ can be most distressing. More than often though, we have no symptoms at all and it is not until a doctor looks inside that you discover what is really going on. Our healthy bowel assessment can give you peace of mind and if you need further tests, scans or treatment, our consultants and nurses will support you every step of the way.

The cost of a healthy bowel assessment is £1,995

This includes:

  • Blood tests including full blood count & kidney function test
  • Initial appointment with an accredited bowel screening consultant
  • Detailed family history & review of blood test results
  • Colonoscopy (including preparation and sedation, if needed)
  • Review of colonoscopy report with consultant (including results of histology if required)

Why do you not offer a stool sample test?

A stool sample can help to identify if there may be conditions affecting the colon including infection and cancer, but they are often not conclusive.

A colonoscopy allows your consultant to view the full length of your colon and spot any abnormalities or suspicious areas straight away. Most polyps can be treated at the same time and a biopsy taken if required, this is included in within the cost of the package.

Why do I need a kidney function test?

A kidney function test is required to ensure it is safe for you to take the preparation to help clear your bowel ahead of your colonoscopy. Your Consultant will review the kidney function test results during your initial consultation and discuss the results with you.

Will I be offered sedation before the colonoscopy?

Yes, you will be offered sedation. It is important that you arrange for someone to drive you home after your colonoscopy as you will not be allowed to drive for approximately 24 hours after sedation.

What if my healthy bowel assessment identifies a problem?

Your consultant will help support you in making decisions about any further scans, tests or treatments you may require and support you through any ongoing treatment you need.  They will also be able to refer you for treatment on the NHS if this is required.

Are additional bowel tests, blood tests and treatments included in the healthy bowel assessment price?

No. Any further tests, scans, treatments or appointments with a consultant not included within the healthy bowel assessment package will incur additional costs. These will be discussed with you and your signed consent will need to be given before any bookings or appointments are made to ensure you are happy to proceed.

What happens if I am one of a small number of people who cannot have a colonoscopy?

If your Consultant does not recommend that you have a colonoscopy, they will be able to discuss alternative investigations that may be more suitable if they feel they are required.

In the unlikely event, a colonoscopy is not appropriate for you; you will be refunded the total cost of the Healthy Bowel Assessment package minus your Consultant fee for your initial consultation.
